ST MARY’S PRIVATE SCHOOL - CLASS OF ‘89 DONATE NEW SCHOOL GATE.
Today
Friday October 26, 2012 turned out to be a very heart warming day for me. First,
it’s my mum’s birthday ******love you mum**********.
Secondly, a very unique group of individuals succeeded in putting smiles on the faces of
another unique set of people. The ST Mary’s Private School Old boys and
girls-class of 1989 unveiled a new school gate donated to the school on behalf
of all our old classmates home and abroad. Yes, I used the word ‘OUR’ because I
too belong to the St Mary’s Private School class of 1989. The happiest period
of my life took place in that school from 1983 to 1989, and its basic
Catholic morals have been with me ever since...well, some of them.
St
Mary’s Private School, Lagos Island was established by catholic missionaries in
1926 and has produced prominent Nigerians such as Cardinal Olubunmi Okojie,
Jimi Agbaje and Stanley Nwabia(Yes ke!) to mention a few.
Most
of the St Mary’s staff present at the unveiling of the school gate were new faces.
All my favorite teachers are no longer there; some are dead, others retired.
But there was this middle aged female teacher that recognized me. Apparently,
she was one of the youngest teachers during my primary six era and she ended
up teaching some of my younger siblings. Every child in my nuclear family
passed through St Mary’s private school, seven of us.
We
had the opportunity to inspect our former classrooms and believe me everything
still looked the same; we discovered that the wooden chairs and desks used
during our time were the ones still in use. And yes, many need to be replaced.
Another shocker was when the schools’ proprietor Reverend Sister Patricia told
us that we were the first set of former pupils to give back to the school as a
group. Many old boys and girls do periodically donate to the school but never
as a group.
Reverend
Sister Patricia believes that more can be achieved if all former students of St
Mary’s Private School come together and help in supporting the school- I agree
with her.

As a product of the school myself, I was shocked to learn a school established in the 1920s has not been given a special pride of place by her old students who are the movers and shakers in our society today.

Here's hoping our much much more senior old boys and girls will do more.
